Types of Kitchen Layout: Pros and Cons

A kitchen is more than just a cooking space. It's a hub of home activity, a point of pride and a place to socialise. The purpose of a kitchen has completely evolved, and it has become very personal to residents.

A pro tip is to maximise your kitchen’s space efficiency and functionality. Every space is unique but there are some standard configurations and common constraints that come into play in a kitchen renovation.

To help inspire your dream kitchen design, check out some pros, cons and design tips for the six most popular kitchen layouts.

    Island Kitchen Layout

Pros : Island kitchens provide the ultimate connection between your kitchen and open-plan living spaces.

Cons : There's nowhere to hide. Your kitchen is on display and the pressure to keep it clean is greater. That being said, the treatment of having your kitchen as an open space goes the same as every other open area in your home – constant cleaning, and regular maintenance.

Moreover, the open connection between the kitchen and living area means there is little separation when it comes to noise and activity.

Design Tip : Make your island a major feature by shaping it into a unique form or using dramatic materials such as marble or timber. Also, rectangular island benches should be at least 2.4 metres long to provide harmonious proportions.

    U-Shaped Kitchens

Pros : U-shaped kitchens can be placed adjacent to the living area, fostering a connection but allowing a degree of privacy from the open-plan living/dining zone.

Cons : A U-shaped kitchen's large mass of cabinets can feel bulky if the detailing isn't closely considered. If you want a classic period vibe to your kitchen, this is the design for you to avail; but if your home is on the modern side, this might not suit your overall household aesthetics.

Design Tip : Watch the gap! The area within the U can be any size, but if too wide it becomes inconvenient putting too much distance between work zones.

    L-Shaped Kitchens

Pros : Adaptable, functional, stylish and social. This is a very popular kitchen layout for houses.

Cons : Sometimes this configuration is all about fitting everything in and the flow when cooking may not be ideal.

Design Tip : In an L-shaped kitchen, finish taller cabinets in a similar colour or material to the walls so they visually blend with the rest of the room.

    Straight Line Kitchens

Pros : This layout is ideal for square-shaped combined dining/kitchen spaces where constraints such as corridors, doors or windows may limit the amount of wall space for cabinetry.

Cons : Unless appliances like dishwashers and fridges are fully integrated, this kitchen design can be visually cluttered. An induction cooktop will also help streamline this kitchen layout.

Design Tip : For a clean look, keep the floor finish consistent between the kitchen and dining/living areas. A tiled or timber floor will work best.

    Galley Kitchens

Pros : This kitchen design has the potential to utilise and transform a passageway into a highly functional space.

Cons : If you’re claustrophobic, this design might not work for you. The tall cabinets disable natural light to come in, making it feel very dark and tight.

Design Tip : Combine full-height cupboards and plenty of bench space with windows or skylights to open up the kitchen and creates a more spacious environment.

    Peninsula Kitchen

Pros : It opens up the kitchen to the adjacent area, allowing for better circulation and a more spacious environment.

Cons : This open space might seem unstable for other residents.

Design Tip : A galley or straight-line kitchen might be a better option. Those are the kitchen layouts preferred by most designers.

Things to Look for Before Hiring a Kitchen builder or Renovator in Sydney

In hiring a kitchen builder or renovator in Sydney, you want to find who’s the best, and not just who’s the most affordable. Make sure to find someone who fits the bill.

Delivering quality workmanship is the first thing that every owner should look for in a kitchen renovator. Top kitchen builder or renovation specialists in Sydney certainly deliver this as they are fully-trained and experienced in handling a wide range of kitchen renovation jobs.

Aside from delivering top-notch quality workmanship, you can expect the local kitchen builder or renovators in Sydney to have the following qualities:

    Licensed and insured

NSW Fair Trading governs all home building and home improvement trades in New South Wales. Kitchens are under the umbrella of the building category in NSW and if you hire anyone to do building work valued at over $1,000, they must hold a builder’s licence issued by NSW Fair Trading.

Special trade licences are required to carry out kitchen renovations in NSW. In order to qualify for a licence, the applicant must have at least one qualification from each of two Groups:

    • Group A qualifications include an existing NSW trade licence in carpentry, joinery, plumbing or Wall & Floor Tiling or Certificate III level training in one of a variety of trades related to the work they carry out.
    • Group B qualifications include the completion of a variety of “units of competency” and/or satisfactory completion of related TAFE certificate courses.

This type of kitchen renovation licence authorises the holder to carry out the type of work they are trained for only. For example, a licensed kitchen renovator might also have a TAFE Certificate IV in Plumbing that qualifies them to obtain a limited licence to install plumbing fixtures in your kitchen.

If you enter into a contract with a kitchen builder or renovation company, they must hold a Contractor’s Licence and anyone who supervises work must also have a Building Supervisor’s Licence.

    Mechanical skills

Most, if not all the time, kitchen renovators will have to work with a variety of tools, machines, and equipment. Being comfortable with these machines is key for a swift and safe workplace.

You don’t want to hire someone who’s not as sharp in navigating renovation equipment. Kitchen renovators must find themselves mechanically inclined as they will be operating, maintaining, and occasionally repairing these types of tools.

    Hand-and-eye coordination

Ultimately, kitchen building and renovation involves physical labour. As other skilled trades, good physical fitness is mandatory for all kitchen renovators.

One should be physically fit to be able to carry wood, equipment, and other materials from one place to another or lift heavy parts to join.

Moreover, kitchen renovators need to have good eye-hand coordination to perform their work smoothly. It’s not just about the technicalities of handwork.

It is also about their detail orientation and mathematical skills. Kitchen renovators should be able to read and analyse blueprints, make precise measurements and calculations, including the estimated cost and time of the renovation and building work.

    Excellent communication skills

A kitchen renovator reports directly to the client, which means a great rapport should be established. A great kitchen renovator will be professional at all times and must always be courteous.

Having great communication skills is also a must in order for them to explain carefully and articulately what needs to be done in the client’s project.

Furthermore, a good kitchen renovator must give utmost respect to the client and the client’s property. Being professional means minding the job alone and respecting the client’s privacy, especially that they are working inside the premises of their homes.
